  1. Averroes, (Arabic Ibn Rushd)
  2. 1126-1198.n philosopher who argued for the
  3. eternity of matter and against the
  4. immortality of the individual soul.  His
  5. philosophical writings, including
  6. commentaries on Aristotle and on Plato's
  7. Republic, became known to the West through
  8. Latin translations.  He influenced Christian
  9. and Jewish writers into the Renaissance, and
  10. reconciled Islamic and Greek thought in that
  11. philosophic truth comes through reason.  St
  12. Thomas Aquinas opposed this position.
  13. Averroes was born in Cordoba, Spain, trained
  14. in medicine, and became physician to the
  15. caliph as well as judge of Seville and
  16. Cordoba.  He was accused of heresy by the
  17. Islamic authorities and banished 1195.  Later
  18. he was recalled, and died in Marrakesh. 
  19. `Averroism' was taught at Paris and elsewhere
  20. in the 13th century by the `Averroists', who
  21. defended a distinction between philosophical
  22. truth and revealed religion.
